Why Doesn't My Business Show Up on Google? (Or in ChatGPT)

ONE SEARCH. FOUND.
Business not showing up on Google? It's usually because Google can't find your website, can't understand what you do, or doesn't trust it enough yet to show it. The same gaps keep you out of ChatGPT and other AI answers. The fix isn't a secret trick: it's a clear, fast website with the right titles, schema and FAQs, plus a Google Business Profile, so both search engines and AI tools know exactly who you are and who you help.
You typed your own business name into Google. Scrolled.
Nothing. Or worse, a competitor.
That little sinking feeling? Very common. And very fixable.
Why can't I find my own business on Google?
Let's start with the good news. You haven't done anything wrong. Most small business owners never got a proper handover on how search works. You were busy doing the actual work: fixing the roof, balancing the books, coaching the client, shooting the wedding.
Meanwhile, your website was quietly built on a template, launched in a hurry, or handed over by someone who has since vanished. (If that last one sounds familiar, we wrote about what to do when your web designer ghosts you.)
Google isn't a phone book. It doesn't list every business by default. It sends out crawlers to find pages, tries to understand them, then decides which ones are worth showing for each search. If any of those three steps breaks, you're invisible.
So when your business is not showing up on Google, it almost always comes down to one of three problems:
- Google hasn't found your site yet
- Google found it but can't tell what you do or where you do it
- Google understands it but trusts other sites more
Is my website even on Google yet?
Here's a two-second test. Go to Google and type `site:yourdomain.com` (swap in your actual web address). If nothing comes back, Google hasn't indexed your site at all.
Common reasons:
- The site is brand new and Google hasn't crawled it yet
- A setting on your website builder is telling search engines to stay away
- There's no sitemap, so Google has no map of what to crawl
The fix here is refreshingly boring. Set up Google Search Console (it's free), verify your domain, and submit your sitemap. That's you politely telling Google, "Hi, I exist, here's where everything is."
Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?
When someone searches "bookkeeper near me" or "landscaper in Kelowna," Google usually shows a map with three local businesses before any regular results.
Those listings come from Google Business Profile, not your website. If you haven't claimed and verified a profile, you won't appear there, full stop.
A few quick wins for local SEO:
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
- Pick the most accurate primary category (be specific: "Interior designer," not just "Designer")
- Keep your business name, address and phone number identical everywhere they appear online
- Ask happy clients for reviews, and reply to them
Your Google Business Profile and your website work as a team. Google checks one against the other. A profile that links to a slow, vague or outdated website is a bit like a great first impression followed by an awkward silence.
Does Google actually understand what my business does?
This is the big one. Plenty of websites are indexed but still invisible, because Google can't work out what they're about.
Google reads your page the way a very literal visitor would. It looks at:
- Your page title (the blue link text in search results)
- Your meta description (the short summary underneath)
- Your headings and the words in them
- Whether your copy clearly names your service and your location
If your page title is "Home" and your headline is a vibe rather than a sentence, you're asking Google to guess.
The fix for small business SEO is clarity. Say what you do, who it's for and where you do it, in words your clients actually type. "Residential landscaping in Chilliwack" beats "Transforming outdoor dreams" every single time.
Clear copy also wins enquiries. If people find you but don't reach out, our post on why your website is not getting enquiries digs into that side.
Is my website too slow or clunky on mobile?
Most people browse on their phone. Google knows this, so it looks at the mobile version of your site first when deciding how to rank it.
Common culprits on DIY and template sites:
- Huge, uncompressed images straight off a camera
- Layouts that were designed on a desktop and squished onto mobile as an afterthought
If you're on one of the big template platforms and wondering whether it's holding you back, have a read of is Wix or Squarespace bad for SEO.
Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my business?
Here's the newer twist. More people now skip the search results and just ask. "Who's a good bookkeeper for trades businesses in BC?" goes into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's own AI answers, and out comes a short list.
Being on that list is called AEO, or answer engine optimisation. It's SEO's younger sibling, and it cares about slightly different things.
AI tools pull from websites they can read easily and trust. They love:
- Clear, direct answers to real questions (hello, FAQs)
- Plain statements of who you are, what you do and where
- Structured data (schema) that labels your business details
- Consistent information across your website, Google Business Profile and directories
If your site is mostly images and clever taglines, an AI tool has nothing to quote. The good news: what helps AI search visibility also helps humans. Clear answers, honest detail, no fluff.
What is it costing me to be invisible online?
When your business is not showing up on Google, you don't get a notification. There's no email saying "Seven people looked for a kitchen renovator in your town today and found someone else." The cost is silent.
Here's what it tends to look like in real life:
- Lost referrals. Someone gets your name from a friend, searches you, finds nothing convincing, and books the business that looked more established.
- More hustle. You end up posting on social every day just to stay visible, because your website isn't doing any of the heavy lifting.
- Competing on price. When people can't see your quality, they compare you on the one thing they can see: cost.
Your work might be brilliant. But if people can't find it, Google can't vouch for it, and AI can't describe it, the brilliance stays a well-kept secret. For more on this, see why your service-based business needs one website that actually works.
How do I get my business on Google? A plain-English checklist
Right. Enough about the problem. Here's the fix. You don't need to become an SEO expert. You need the fundamentals done properly, once.
- Make sure your site is indexed: set up Google Search Console and submit your sitemap
- Write a unique page title with your main service and location in it
- Write a meta description that says what you do and why someone should click
- Use one clear headline that names your service in plain words
- Add descriptive alt text to your images
- Compress images and keep the page fast on mobile
- Add schema markup for your business (more on this below)
- Include an FAQ section that answers the questions clients actually ask you
- Add an llms.txt file so AI tools get a clean summary of your business
- Claim, verify and fill out your Google Business Profile
- Keep your name, address and phone number consistent everywhere
- Collect reviews, steadily, from real clients
What is schema, and why should a small business care?
Schema sounds technical. It's actually quite simple.
It's a bit of hidden code on your website that labels information for search engines and AI tools. Instead of Google reading "Open Monday to Friday, 8 to 5" and guessing what it means, schema says, "These are the business hours." Same for your business name, location, services and FAQs.
Schema won't magically push you to the top of Google. It removes the guesswork, so your details are more likely to show up correctly, in search and in AI answers.
What is llms.txt, and do I really need one?
This one is newer. An llms.txt file is a short, plain text summary of your website, written specifically for AI tools like ChatGPT. It sits on your site and says, in effect, "Here's who we are, here's what we do, here are the important pages."
Is it a guaranteed ticket into AI recommendations? No. Nobody can honestly promise that. But it's a small, low-effort way to make your business easier for AI tools to read and summarise accurately, and it's quickly becoming part of good AEO housekeeping.

FAQs
How long does it take for a new website to show up on Google?
A new website usually starts appearing in Google within a few days to a few weeks, once it's crawled and indexed. Submitting a sitemap through Google Search Console speeds that up. Ranking well for competitive searches takes longer, often several months, and depends on clear content, local signals, reviews and how established your competitors are.
What is AEO?
AEO stands for answer engine optimisation. It's the practice of making your website easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers to read, understand and quote. It relies on clear, direct answers, FAQs, schema markup, consistent business details and an llms.txt file. Think of it as SEO for the way people now ask questions.
How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business?
Nobody can guarantee an AI recommendation, but you can make it far more likely. Say clearly what you do, who you serve and where. Add FAQs that answer real client questions, schema markup and an llms.txt file. Keep your Google Business Profile and directory listings consistent, and build genuine reviews and mentions over time.
Does a Google Business Profile replace a website?
No. A Google Business Profile helps you appear on Google Maps and local results, but it's limited and owned by Google. Your website is where people check your quality, read your story and decide to book. Google and AI tools also use your website to confirm your profile details, so the two work best together.
How long does the ProjectOne process take?
Around 14 working days from start to a live website. That covers onboarding, the build, your First Look, one focused round of revisions, Framer development and launch. Sprints are scheduled at least three weeks ahead, so pick a period when you can respond to emails and send feedback promptly.
Do you use AI to build the site?
Partly, and only where it helps. AI assists with drafting copy using the StoryBrand framework, then a senior copywriter edits and refines it so it sounds like you. The design is 100% human-made. You get the speed of modern tools with the judgement and craft of real people who have built a lot of websites.
Is this actually custom or just a template?
It's fully custom. Your site is designed from scratch around your business, your clients and your goals. It's never a retrofitted template with your logo dropped in. The only thing that stays consistent between projects is our process, which is what lets us deliver a custom site in around 14 working days.
Is it really monthly, or do I pay anything upfront?
It really is monthly. You pay equal instalments across the term, with hosting included, and there's no lump sum or upfront charge. At the end of the plan you can refresh with a brand new redesign and keep going, or take ownership of the site and pay Framer hosting directly.
